It’s September. Saturdays are louder. Schedules revolve around kickoff. And everyone suddenly has very strong opinions about play calling. Which got us thinking about media.

You can have all the talent in the world, but call the right play at the wrong time and it’s not getting you very far. Same goes for advertising. A killer idea. A beautifully produced spot. A message people need to hear. None of it can do its job if the right people never see it.
Great creative gets attention. Great media makes sure it gets the right attention.

Media Is More Than Buying Space

Once upon a time, the media plan was fairly straightforward. TV. Radio. Outdoor. Print. Negotiate the buy. Get the campaign out there. Yeah, those days are over.

Today, someone can watch the game on TV, check stats on their phone, scroll social during a commercial break, stream highlights later and pass a billboard on the drive home. More places to reach people? Absolutely. More places to waste money? Also yes. The goal isn’t to show up everywhere. It’s to know where your audience is, what they’re doing there and when your message has the best chance of actually mattering.

That takes more than a media buy. It takes a strategy.

The Game Plan Starts Before the Campaign Does

At Bosun, media doesn’t show up after the creative is finished and ask, “So, where are we putting this?”

Our media team is in from the start, digging into audiences, markets, behaviors and business goals to figure out not only where a campaign belongs, but why it belongs there. Sometimes that’s broadcast. Sometimes paid search, social, streaming, programmatic or outdoor. Usually, it’s a smart mix of channels, each with a specific job to do.

Channels are tactics. Strategy tells us how to use them. And hitting “launch” isn’t the end of the job. Once a campaign is live, the data starts talking. We listen. We measure. Learn. Optimize. Shift dollars. Refine audiences. Double down on what’s working and rethink what isn’t.

Call it an audible. Call it doing our jobs. Either way, the plan gets smarter as we go.

AI Just Joined the Huddle

AI isn’t new to media. It’s been optimizing bids, identifying audiences and determining when and where ads appear for years. What’s changing is how much more it can do. Today, AI can analyze signals, uncover opportunities and adjust campaigns in real time, helping us make smarter decisions faster.

Does that mean we hand over the playbook? Hard no. Think of AI as one very overachieving addition to the coaching staff. It can analyze more data and spot patterns faster. But people still have to define what matters.
AI can help answer questions faster. Our job is making sure we’re asking the right ones. Because the future of media isn’t AI versus human expertise. It’s better tools, better data and experienced people using both to make every media dollar work harder.

Right Message. Right Place. Right Moment.

Our latest work for UT Medical shows what happens when creative and media work as one team. David was at a football game when a “sledgehammer” feeling hit his chest. What followed was a race against time, with UT Medical’s Event Medicine team and hospital care team working together to get him the life-saving care he needed. See the work.

It was a powerful story to tell. But telling it was only half the job. The other half was making sure it reached the people most likely to connect with it, in the places and moments they were ready to pay attention.
That’s what good media does. It gives great creative somewhere meaningful to go.

There’s No One-Channel Offense

The media landscape will keep changing. Platforms will come and go. Viewing habits will shift. Targeting will get smarter. AI will get smarter. And whatever worked yesterday will eventually need another look. But the fundamentals? Those stick around.

Know your audience. Know what you want them to do. Give every channel a reason for being there. Measure what matters. Learn. Adjust. Repeat. Because collecting channels and racking up impressions isn’t the goal. Making an impact is. And when strategy, creative and media are working from the same playbook, great ideas don’t just get seen. They get to work.
